Nameplate APOLLO. Ex British Railways Standard Class 4-6-2 'Britannia' Pacific Locomotive number 70015. Built Crewe in June 1951 and although initially intended for the Western Region, it went on promotion to the LMR and was allocated to Campden MPD. When the Western Britannias moved from Old Oak Common to Cardiff Canton, Apollo followed and saw regular, express service on the Capitals United and the Red Dragon. When all the Western Britannias moved to the LMR, Apollo was allocated to Annesley, where it often worked Great Central expresses. Later to Trafford Park and finally Kingmoor. The torch came in August 1967. The plate has a lovely patina and is bereft of paint. Since removal from the loco, the mounting holes have been drilled out and countersunk to enable easier fixing to the wall. Note: Apollo, Greek God of Archery and Arts, slayer of the Serpent Python and lover of many including Cassandra. The name was certainly a favourite and was used on locomotives from as early as 1845. The LNWR, GWR, LSWR and even the Taff Vale liked the name and used it on their locos. |
