Also on the binding "Holiday Haunts 1936" and " GWR". It is in extremely good condition and retains the rear wallet containing the GWR map. The Majestic, the second ship to carry the name, started life in 1910 when Albert Ballin of Germany's Hamburg America Line (Hapag), conceived a trio of great liners to rival Cunard's Lusitania, Mauretania and Aquitania and White Star's Olympic, Titanic and Gigantic (later renamed Britannic). The third of these, Bismarck, was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in 1913, and launched in 1914. Bismarck lay uncompleted at Hamburg throughout World War I and was ceded to Great Britain as a war reparation in 1919. Her sister ships suffered the same fate with Imperator becoming Cunard's Berengaria and Vaterland the United States Lines' Leviathan. Re-fitting took place and was finally completed in March 1922. Although her new owner (White Star) and new name (Majestic) were already known, she was completed in Hapag's colors and with the name Bismarck on her bow and stern. After her sea trials, she was formally turned over to White Star and, while still at Hamburg, was repainted and renamed. Her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, was on 10 May 1922. At 56,551 tons, Majestic was the largest ship in the world, and would retain that distinction until Normandie's arrival in 1935. In 1934, she, like Berengaria, became part of Cunard White Star. Her final transatlantic crossing was February 1936. |

Totem, BR(M) RAINHILL, F/F. Ex LNWR station of absolute fame being the very cradle of Railways. In 1829 Rainhill, a tiny hamlet between Liverpool and Manchester was the scene of trials on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The steam locomotive was at that time slow and extremely basic, operating at no more than walking pace. The Directors decided to offer a prize for a new locomotive capable of hauling a considerable load at a speed of at least 10 miles per hour over a distance of 70 miles. The trials were held in the October, and Stephenson's Rocket amazed the world by reaching speeds in excess of 30 miles per hour and fulfilling all the required conditions. This established the steam locomotive as the prime mover for the railways which rapidly spread all over the world, and the basic features of Rocket's design were incorporated into every steam locomotive ever built. This totem is in lovely condition with deep colour and shine. There is one small chip on the horizontal line above the letter 'A' which barely detracts. |

Nameplate ROYAL SCOT. Ex LMS 4-6-0 first of class Locomotive numbered 6100. Built by the North British Locomotive Works, Queens Park in 1927 with the Works Number 23595. Doyen of the class and built in the batch of Royal Scots numbered 6100 - 6124 at the Queens Park Works, the other batch, numbered 6125 - 6149, were under construction, simultaneously, at the Hyde Park Works. Interestingly, it was 6125 that was temporarily disguised as 6100 for the official works photograph. It had the Royal Scot nameplates attached but an error well known through the years was that it still bore the wrong, circular Hyde Park Worksplate! On April 11th 1933, a Royal Scot engine was shipped to the USA for the Chicago World Fair. General consensus is that 6152, a Derby built Scot, changed identity with 6100 and ran from May 1st until May 25th on Canadian tours and from June 1st until October, it resided in Chicago. It re-commenced tours back to Canada and was finally repatriated on December 5th after covering 11,194 miles. Some time after arrival in the UK, the new nameplates, commemorating the visit to America, were fitted. Rebuilt in 1950, little of the original was retained. Withdrawn 13/10/62 after a total of 2,141,229 miles. Measuring 35" in length and solid brass construction, the front and rim face is nicely polished and the original, matt maroon paint shows through the black, over-painted background. The edge has original traces of gloss maroon used on the actual loco and the back has a truly wonderful patina. The Vendor bought the plate in 1981 from the then, well known collector Richard Rutherford and a letter of authenticity, signed by Mr Rutherford, accompanies the plate. The letter indicates, and indeed has been confirmed, that it was once in the collection of Frank Burridge, author of the superlative book 'Nameplates Of The Big Four' (ISBN 0-902888-43-9) GWRA are proud to offer such a magnificent nameplate on behalf of the Vendor, and we consider this to be one of the very few top plates ever to come to market. |
